Although the Penns Valley volleyball team had a tough season, they managed to make it through the first round of playoffs last Thursday. The team ended the season with a 8-9 record, ranking them 11th in the district. In District 6 AA, districts take the top 12 teams to the playoffs, which the girls just managed to squeeze through.

In the first round on Thursday, they played the sixth seed, Marion Center. Despite the long trip, and ranking against them the girls fought it out and swept Marion Center. The final scores for each set were 25-25, 25-19, and 26-24. The final set was close, with Marion Center leading a majority of the set. However, the girls were able to preserver and come out on top. The team was led by Cameron Upcraft who had 13 kills, and Kailen Winkelblech not far behind with 9.

Next, the girls head to Forest Hills in the quarterfinals. Forest Hills is ranked third, stacking the odds against the girls once again. However, they have already proven once that the rankings mean nothing. If they pull through they will play on Thursday against Central Cambria. Following that is the district finals which will be held Saturday 11/6 at Altoona High School where the top two teams will fight for the championship. In addition, the top two teams will both move on to states and have a fighting chance at a state title.

In Penns Valley history, the volleyball team has only ever made it to the semi-finals of the district playoffs. Therefore, if the girls win the game against Forest Hills they will match that record, and if they continue on they will break it.
