How Much Stress does Schoolwork put on Teenagers?
October 29, 2019
Many students within the school system feel they have too much pressure put on them and their stress levels are through the roof. For many teenagers, balancing challenging courses, jobs, applying to college and stress from home all factor into why they are so stressed.
A good amount of students feel pressured by their parents, teachers or even their friends to challenge themselves to succeed in school. Some find themselves challenged with multiple vigorous courses at a time, all with their own set of problems to solve. While taking these hard classes, a lot of students try to maintain a job or sports while the school year is going.
Sports and jobs themselves can be stressful, but added schoolwork leaves limited time in the day for students to get everything done. There are only 24 hours in a day, it can be challenging for students to achieve all their tasks before the designated time limit. As students get into their junior and senior years of high school, the stress only gets worse. The idea of college and deciding what they want to do for the rest of their life is terrifying.
Parents and families only add to the chaos, as they expect teenagers to get everything done for school, keep their grades up, make money for themselves, apply to college and help out around the house. Anymore, it is normal for students to be stressed out daily because it’s how they feel when dealing with all these tasks.
In her article The Epidemic of Anxiety Among Today’s Students, Mary Flannery explains, “Anxiety—the mental-health tsunami of their generation—has caught up with them.” Them, referring to students, are some of the most anxious people in the upcoming generations. It seems that as time goes on, stress inducers rise and the stress relievers become less and less available to students.
