On Friday, September 15, 2023, Ty Watson excelled to have the second-highest number of career points in Centre County during the Penns Valley Rams’ away game against the Philipsburg-Osceola Mounties. Watson had begun the battle with 344 points and finished with a total of 357 career points. It was a tough fight for the Rams as they were down for the majority of the game, but they managed to prove they were the stronger team by pulling off the win.
Watson is a senior on the Penns Valley football team. He takes on the running back position with great speed and durability. This position in football is not easy to fulfill, but Watson does it with great effort. He receives handoffs from Jackson Romig, the Rams’ quarterback, lines up as a receiver to catch passes, and blocks opponents that interfere with the action of the play. He not only shows the ability to do these actions but exceeds the average expectations, as he is one of the top scorers in Centre County football history. Watson is also an outside linebacker and kicker for the Rams.
Watson began his football career when he was just 10 years old. He started in pee-wee, made his way to midget, junior high, junior varsity, and for the past two years he has been on the varsity team.
Against the Mounties, Watson scored one touchdown, four extra points, and one field goal for a total of 13 points, allowing him to now have 357 career points. Ahead of him is Larry Johnson with 390 total points. Watson declared, “It feels great to be close to breaking an NFL players’ record”.
Johnson went to State College High School and graduated in 1998. After high school, he was a part of the Penn State football team from 1999 to 2002. As a senior at Penn State, he took third for the Heisman trophy and then proceeded to be drafted into the NFL. He was picked in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs where he played for six years. Following that, he played for the Cincinnati Bengals, the Washington Redskins, and the Miami Dolphins leaving him to have a very successful football career.
