The team
The five starters for the boys’ varsity team are Fletcher Ironside (Jr.), Carter Ironside (Jr.), Spencer Althouse (So.), Carson Webster (Sr.), and Noah Patel (Jr.). This starting team lacks in size, with the tallest player at around 6’0″. However, the team makes up for its lack of size with its speed and hustle. Carter Shouey, a Junior on the team says, “We work hard and are energetic”.
The start of the season
Penns Valley has had a shaky start to the season, but their record of two and five can be deceiving as to how good the team is. The first four games of the season were losses, but PV played tough teams. All four teams currently combine for one total loss. These games were played against Tyrone, West Branch, Westmost Hilltop, and Central Martinsburg. The next two games on the schedule were against Central Mountain and Huntington. The game against CM was a great win for Penns Valley in overtime in which multiple starters scored over fifteen points. Huntington was also a win, this time more comfortably. The most recent game was against Bishop Guilfoyle, a tough, undefeated team. PV lost but played a close game for the first three quarters. Towards the end, BG pulled away, but it was a hard-fought battle nonetheless. Looking forward, The team hopes to get a win against Bellewood-Antis before a small break in games over the holidays. Fletcher Ironside, a two-year starter, said this about the season so far, “it started rough but we are getting there”.
