Are the Olympics Getting Shut Down Due to Covid?

In Tokyo, Japan, hosts are closing the 2021 Olympics due to Covid-19. A news article says “the Japanese government has privately concluded that the Tokyo Olympics will have to be canceled because of the coronavirus, and the focus is now on securing the Games for the city in the next available year, 2032.” Not only is Japan planning on closing the Olympics but this decision turned into a global decision whether they should or should not close this event. Meanwhile, if hosts did decide to keep the 2021 Olympics up and running, all people attending would be required to wear and mask and people have been talking about how the audience might not be able to enter the building. What If this were to happen you might ask? The audience would have to stay out in their cars and watch digitally but they don’t have an official plan yet. People are expecting the opening ceremonies to take place on July 23 and more than 11,000 athletes from over 200 countries are supposed to descend on Tokyo for the Games. Also along with that, another additional 4,000 for the Paralympics, as well as thousands of officials, support staff, coaches, and members of the media. Knowing how many people are planning on attending would make it hard to watch virtually.

Another news article states that “Travelers will have to produce a negative test within 72 hours of departure and then test negative upon arrival. They will not have to quarantine but aren’t allowed to go to restaurants, bars, stores, tourist destinations or ride public transportation during their first 14 days. They may not attend Olympic events in which they aren’t participating.” and “All travelers must submit a detailed itinerary — including the names of anyone they will be in close contact with, such as teammates to Japanese authorities. They must input details of their health and any symptoms they are experiencing into a mandatory mobile app. Athletes are discouraged from chanting or singing while cheering for others, but are encouraged to clap.” Along with all of this news, you are expected to follow the rules to stay safe and if you refuse to, you will get sent home. With all of these people attending, will everyone be expected to get the Covid-19 vaccine? The IOC is trying to encourage athletes to get the vaccine to try and make sure everyone is going to be safe since it is such a big event. Although some people might not get the vaccine, a covid test is still required to enter the building.
