Penns Valley Documentary Film Festival

Rowley Vanada

Media Communications is a elective that Penn’s Valley offers. It is a 18 week course taught by Mr. Farley. By taking Media you are open to many different experiences that you don’t get in any other classes. Students in Media are responsible for making the morning announcements, short segments, and creating articles for the Rambling Ram. You also get the advantage of learning all about media and how to create something. For example, you learn about camera angles and get to watch movies to see how they are used. Students also get to work within their groups for mini projects like a short film, movies, and trailers. There are so many different opportunities. But the best part of Media is being able to be part of the Penn’s Valley Documentary Film Festival. As of 2022 Mr. Farley has hosted 6 of these festivals. This is one of the biggest projects in the media. It starts with students who are given a week to figure out what they can create a documentary on, it can be a in or out of school topic. After they chose, they complete a outline and Mr. Farley approves this outline. After that they are given around a month to complete filming and editing. The main requirements are that the documentary must be a length of 5 minutes and have a story line to it. These documentaries are then shown over a course of a couple days in the auditorium. Students can have guest to join them and watch if their teachers give them permission. While they are being shown in the auditorium they are also competing for awards. These awards include best editing, outstanding interviewer, best cinematography, and The Golden Farley. The Golden Farley is the grand prize of the festival. The Golden Farley is presented to the film maker who creates the best overall production. This includes story telling, post production of editing, camera work, and questioning. The finished product that tells a powerful story and a long lasting message. The Film Festival a big event and if you are interested then take Media Communications.
