Time’s Up for TikTok

Times Up for TikTok

Kyleigh Brown

Did you hear that TikTok might be banned again? You might be wondering why or thinking about the fact that this is the second time the U.S. has threatened to shut down TikTok. You could be wondering why they’re trying to shut it down again. I’m here to answer all the questions you have about the reasons for this and it may leave you questioning everything.

As most of you know, in 2020 president Donald Trump tried and failed to ban Tiktok because he believed it was a national security threat. I’m starting to think he might’ve been right. TikTok is owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance. ByteDance headquarters is located in Beijing and is owned by Zhang Yiming. Now, what does TikTok shutting down have to do with ByteDance? Well, President Joe Biden is the one that fears for our national security safety this time. The U.S. government is trying to shut down TikTok over their fear of the Chinese government’s ability to access user data. It isn’t just the United States that fear for our safety, plenty of other countries banned TikTok for the exact same reason. These countries include France, Taiwan, Britain, the European Union, Pakistan, India, Canada, Asia, and Afghanistan. TikTok is most used in the U.S. so naturally, we can predict this will cause a lot of protesting from content creators on the popular platform.

What will happen if they ban TikTok, you may ask? When TikTok is banned it won’t completely disappear from all devices. They will order all app stores to stop showing TikTok on their platforms. This means that all devices that already have TikTok installed will continue to keep the app but any new devices will remain without the app and the owner will not be able to download TikTok on that device.

I use TikTok a lot, it is one of my favorite apps and I would be devastated if it got banned, I know many people would agree with me on that. However, I can’t say I disagree with their actions, as I can understand why they are doing what their doing and I know they are doing all of it for our safety. Now, all major opinions about the app aside, with the facts I’ve shared with you today, do you think Joe Biden is wrong for what he’s doing?
