As the leaves are turning brown, falling to the ground, the deer are out and about. All throughout the valley they are active. Deer here deer there, deer everywhere. Anywhere you look, beautiful trees, mountains, and wildlife. All the archery hunters around Penn’s Valley are excited about the great experiences they get when they are in the woods hunting such a beautiful creature like the whitetail deer.
A local Penn’s Valley hunter John Meyer speaks his opinion on how his archery season is going so far. “You know, I am trying to get on the big ones, but the weather hasn’t been working in my favor, hopefully we can rebound and shoot a stud by the end of archery season.
A Penn’s Valley native Maddie Butler speaks out on how her dad Scott Butler hunts archery during the season. ” I am excited to see if he will shoot a buck because he is always away hunting in Ohio, and he showed me some big bucks on camera and I hope he can slay a big one.”
As a flashback of last season things are looking good for the fellow archery hunters, there was a 12% increase of whitetail deer harvest last year. In 2021-22, there was a estimated harvest of 376,000. There was 164,000 Buck harvested, and 258,000 anterless deer harvested. Last year in 2022-23 there was a estimate of 422,000 deer harvested. So an increase in deer harvested might be a good thing and a bad thing for hunters. The more tags the game commission give out and the more poachers, and people that don’t follow the rules, the more of a decrease the deer population will be.
