One Runner Overcoming Adversity

One Runner Overcoming Adversity

Running is a very good hobby to have when you are older. There are many benefits to running. Some benefits include increased lung capacity, helps your immune system, and physical strength. These are just some of the many great advantages to running. Anyone can be a runner, doctors, older people, and even teachers. One teacher in particular named Mr.Farley is a runner. When I asked him how he started he responded with, “Before I learned to run, I learned to walk. I would go on long walks with my wife and dog (now child). Then I made the logical transition to run. Ordered a pair of brooks and started slowly. I would stop every quarter mile and walk a little. I stuck with it and about 2 weeks in I could run longer. I kept working at it until I could run a full 5k without stopping”. Running is that easy to just pick up. You just have to have determination and drive to keep getting better each and every day.

Now every human being sometimes faces unexpected obstacles or problems. Sadly Mr. Farley had to go through that trauma. Here is a brief overview of what  Mr. Farley had to say about his experience, “ I was about a mile in and I knew something was wrong. I recall that it became more painful to breathe and this was at a time when I needed to breathe more than ever. Every breath was as if a knife was being plunged through my lungs. Sadly the hours after my run the pain persisted to the point where I was unable to be at school the next day.But I gradually recovered and did not let this experience end my journey.” After this incident he took some rest and got back to his normal self. He didn’t let this stop him from his journey in running so Friday the 18th he started running again. I asked him how getting back into running went and this is what he had to say, “ On Friday the weather was not as cold and while it would be easier to never lace up and run again I knew the easy answer was not the right answer. And so I went back to the streets and ran. I paced myself as I recovered and now believe I am at 100%”. As you can see the athlete Mr. Farley overcame adversity and got back to running.

If you are ever in a situation like Mr. Farley remembers it is not failure and that it will only make you stronger. Many people give up after injuries or unexpected events. We as humans need to learn to become stronger and to not give up.
